Susukino, One of Japan’s Three Major Red-Light Districts—Sapporo, Hokkaido

In Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, there’s a street that cannot be overlooked. By day, it seems like a slumbering lady—calm, serene, and at peace with the passage of time. But once night falls, this tranquil lady transforms into a seductive little enchantress, drawing you in with her allure. This place is called Susukino (ススキノ), which can be translated as Susukino in Chinese. Susukino is one of Japan’s most famous red-light districts, alongside Kabukicho in Tokyo and Nakasu in Fukuoka. Some Asian tour groups even refer to Susukino as "The City That Never Sleeps."

Upon visiting Hokkaido, one can observe the lively atmosphere of Susukino in the evening. Bunny girls can be seen enticing customers, hosts with flamboyant hairstyles line the streets, while intoxicated office workers and tourists snap photos to capture the bustling nightlife. Although most establishments in Susukino typically don’t serve foreign tourists and cater only to those proficient in Japanese, some venues discreetly welcome non-Japanese speakers—though often at a higher price.

Hokkaido’s red-light district differs from those in Tokyo and Honshu. In Tokyo and Honshu, touching is generally not allowed in these types of establishments. However, in Sapporo, there are two kinds of packages that allow varying degrees of physical contact with the girls, depending on the type of service and establishment you choose. Many people who’ve been to Japan may have noticed signs or shops labeled "無料案内所" (free information center), but don’t be mistaken—these are not tourist information centers! They are introductions to the various clubs and services available, helping you find the right place, the right service, and the right girl.

Despite being a red-light district, Susukino is known for its safety. Even if you’re a woman walking alone at night, there’s no need to worry. For those planning a trip to Hokkaido, feel free to take a stroll outside these establishments and snap a few photos of the colorful signs!
